Selection and Photographic Guidelines
The Renaissance Library Calendar and
other products in the Renaissance Library Collection (quality prints, greeting
cards and posters) focus on pictures of beautiful and historic libraries.
Composition of photograph
The pictures we use normally feature a panoramic view of the interior of the
libraries we select for the calendar, in full colour. We prefer to use photos,
which show clearly that the image is that of a library, so we look for pictures,
which include at least part of the library's book collection. We also prefer
that the pictures do not have people in them, if possible. Shots of the exterior
of the library building, however beautiful in their own right, are not
appropriate therefore.
If you need help you to select an appropriate subject and composition for your
photograph, you can see a couple of images of libraries, which featured in the
2006 calendar here:

Calendar Format and Image Size
The printed calendar is a wall calendar, each page of which is A4 size. When it
is hung on a wall, it opens out to an A3 double page spread, with a library
photo in the top half, and a descriptive text and monthly calendar in the bottom
half. The photographs are presented A4 size and in a landscape (horizontal)
format. A4 is a European standard paper size, which is 8.27 inches x 11.69
inches or 210mm x 297mm.
For the sake of absolute clarity, the image of your library will appear as
approximately 11.69 inches (297mm) wide by 8.27 inches (210 mm) deep, although
there will be a small white border around the photo. Many times, we can crop a
horizontal image from a high quality vertical image. We will send you a proof of
the photograph and its accompanying text, prior to the final printing process.
Nominations
If your library has been nominated to appear in the Renaissance Library Calendar,
we need to see a photo or series of photos from you, which can be in printed
format or in a low resolution jpeg. Electronic images should be sent to info@isim.org
Printed materials should be sent to:

Final Selection
When we make our final selection for the annual Renaissance Library Calendar, we
focus on angles like:
- is the library photogenic?
- is the library situated in a seldom covered or even new country?
- is the library old enough for the calendar - about 100 years old or more?
There is some flexibility on this.
- does the library have an interesting history?
- are there any books in the picture?
Photographic Image
If your library has been selected to appear in the Renaissance Library Calendar,
we need a higher quality image from you for the printing process. At this stage,
our preference is that you provide us with an electronic image of the requisite
quality. This is preferably in TIFF format, based on a very high quality scan of
at least 300dpi at A4 size (11.69 inches (297mm) wide by 8.27 inches (210 mm)
deep. The electronic image is likely to be 40 or 50 megabytes in size, so you
are welcome to send it to us on a CD-Rom or DVD, also to the address given above.
Alternatively, you can place it on a website for us to download.
If this is not possible for some reason, we may be prepared to accept a
transparency or diapositive.
Attribution and Commercial Terms
We are happy to post an attribution to the photographer, and/or to your library,
but on a commercial basis, we normally supply you with 10 free copies of the
calendar as consideration. You will receive 20 free copies, if your library is
selected for the front cover. These will be sent to you, when the calendar is
published.
The photograph will appear in the calendar for which it is selected, together
with any associated promotional activities, including appearance on our websites.
We will also be sending you a copyright clearance form for signature.
