1)WELCOME AND EDITORIAL
========================================================
Welcome to the 14th issue of the Renaissance Library
newsletter.
This month, we've got something for everybody.
If you're a library supplier or consultant, make sure you
read our second article.
For you and for everybody else, we've got pieces on two
specific libraries - St. Catherine's Monastery in Egypt
and the Folger Shakespeare Library in the USA.
There's a bit of fun with an electronic jigsaw puzzle.
Take a look when you have a minute or two.
There's an article about the Renaissance Library Book Store,
now on our main website.
And for our readers outside the USA, there's a call for help
from a reader, who wants your library cards - item 7).
Finally, we include our regular Library of the Month feature.
This time, it's the Folger Shakespeare Library, which is the
featured library for November in the 2004 calendar.
For those of you, who didn't read the last newsletter, it's
time to remind you that the 2005 edition of the Renaissance
Library Calendar is now available.
Details at http://www.renaissancelibrary.com
For those of you who want to buy copies as gifts for your
customers and colleagues - please don't delay. They are
going fast - over half sold in 3 weeks.
The same applies if you want a supply of our lovely greeting
cards - details at

2)2005 CALENDARS GOING FAST
======================================================
Some people shop early for Christmas, others shop late. I'm
pretty much in the second category. Sometimes, that means I
miss out.
Well, please make sure you don't miss out this year.
The Renaissance Library Calendar 2005 was released on
October 5th, and in the first 3 weeks, over half of the
calendars have been sold.
Make sure you get your copy now, before it's too late.

3)FOR LIBRARY SUPPLIERS AND CONSULTANTS
======================================================
If you sell any products or services to libraries
- Then the beautiful products in the Renaissance Library
Collection can help you with your marketing.
This is because they have been designed specially for
librarians, information specialists, book lovers and
bibliophiles -
by people who also have a deep love for libraries.
Not many gifts are designed specially for this highly
educated group, and our unique and highly individual
products are truly loved by the people who buy them.
If you are in the business of supplying goods and services
to these individuals, this gives you an unusual and very
exciting opportunity.

4)TWO FASCINATING NEW WEBSITES ABOUT ST. CATHERINE'S
MONASTERY LIBRARY IN SINAI DESERT
========================================================
I received an email from a reader this week, who had signed
up for our no cost email course:
"About the Libraries in the Renaissance Library Collection."
She was asking whether there was a link to the website of
one of the libraries featured in the course, because there
wasn't a link in the tutorial she had received.
The library in question was at the amazing St. Catherine's
Monastery in Sinai, Egypt, which dates back to 527AD.
The reason that there was no link was because the monastery
actually has no website. But I did a little research and
found two new sites, which many readers may find of interest.
The first is a site devoted to the work of some of the
people involved in the St.Catherine's Library Conservation
Project. You can see that here:
http://www.arts.ac.uk/research/stcatherines/index.php
The second site is run by the Egyptian State Information
Service and is more about the unique monastery itself and
its history and icons. You can see that here:
http://www.sis.gov.eg/saintcathr/html/
Please take a moment to visit the sites - you'll learn a
lot about the monastery, its library and its history.
Some of the pictures also give you a good idea of just how
remote the monastery is. For centuries, it was accessible
only by a long camel ride of several days.
By the way, our reader also had some good things to say
about the course. You can sign up for it here:
http://www.renaissancelibrary.com/about-the-libraries.htm
or by sending a blank email to
mailto:libraries@renaissancelibrary.com
======================================================
5)JIGSAW PUZZLE FUN
======================================================
Here's something a bit different - a little bit of fun.
It's an electronic jigsaw puzzle, based on one of the
Renaissance Library posters.
If you have a minute to spare (and I know you probably
don't), why not take a look?
It's a little program, which you can run or download on
your PC. I've run it a few times and tested it for
viruses and it seems to be ok.
You can see it here.
http://renaissancelibrary.com/RLP01%20puzzle.exe
If there's interest, I'll consider doing some more,
based on individual pictures of our beautiful old libraries.
========================================================
6)THE RENAISSANCE LIBRARY BOOK STORE
========================================================
We've recently brought our Renaissance Library Book Store
over to our new look website.
You can see it at:
http://www.renaissancelibrary.com/book-store.htm
We have brought together here a selection of books, which
are companions to the libraries featured in the various
issues of the Renaissance Library Calendar.
The books chosen
* may be about a specific library
* may be about the founder or architect of a specific library
* may feature items in an individual library's collection
* may be published by a specific library or its associated museum
We have concentrated on books, which are readily available.
They are also written in English.
We will add to the list on a regular basis.
If you have specific recommendations to make, please let me
know by email at mailto:stuart.urwin@isim.org
======================================================
7)PLEASE HELP A GOOD CAUSE, IF YOUR LIBRARY IS
OUTSIDE THE USA
======================================================
A couple of weeks ago, I received this email from Steve
Kevlin, who works in the Library Services dept.of the Tacoma
School District in Wichitaw, USA. Steve's looking for
library cards from around the World, to promote reading and
libraries.
Well, we're always pleased to support a good cause, and as
we have readers in many countries, I thought I would pass
his message on to you. If you're at a library outside the
USA and can send him your library card, please do so at
the address below.
Here's the email he sent me.

Subject: Library Question
Good morning,
I was just at your site and we are going to be ordering once
again the new calendar. I work for the Tacoma School District,
in our library services dept. I was wondering if I may ask
you for some assistance.
We are putting together a program to promote reading and
libraries. I have collected 2 library cards from every state
in the U.S.A. , now I have to go global could you give me a
list of some folks that you think would send us a card from
their library. or you may just email this out to whom ever
you think would send us a card directly.
We are going to try and get at least one card from every
country. I have been given Europe and the Americas to do,
another person has Africa, Asia and another has Austrailia
and New Zeland. However if you do know folks in any country
that would do this please forward this message.
Thank you for your time
Sincerely
Steve Kevlin

8)NOVEMBER LIBRARY OF THE MONTH - FOLGER SHAKESPEARE
LIBRARY
========================================================
The current (2004) calendar features the Folger Shakespeare
Library in Washington DC, USA, in November.
The Folger Shakespeare Library, an Independent Research
Library, was founded by Henry Clay Folger and his wife,
Emily Jordan Folger. Mr. Folger died in 1930, so he did not
see the opening of the library on the anniversary of
Shakespeare’s birthday on 23rd April, 1932.
The Folger is an important research centre for scholars
interested in Shakespeare and the Renaissance. It is a
lively venue for exhibitions and the performing and literary
arts, and is also a leader in humanities education for
grades K-12.
The building’s architecture has earned it a listing in the
National Register of Historic Places. Inside, the original
reading room replicates an Elizabethan great hall. An
intimate theatre, designed in the spirit of an Elizabethan
Innyard Theatre, is located at the east end of the building.
The Folger houses the world’s largest collection of
Shakespeare’s printed works, as well as collections of other
rare Renaissance books and manuscripts on all disciplines –
history and politics, theology and exploration, law and the
arts. It includes:
- 79 First Folios, the largest collection in the World
- 255,000 books and 55,000 manuscripts
- 250,000 playbills, and other theatrical memorabilia
- 27,000 paintings, drawings, engravings, and prints
- Theatrical porcelain, decorated papers, costumes, and film.
There is much more information about the Folger at its rich
and entertaining website at http://www.folger.edu/
