Brief History
The original Collège de Sorbonne was founded in 1257. The
Sorbonne was closed in 1791 at the time of the French
Revolution. The library's 2,000 manuscripts were sent to the
Bibliothèque Nationale, where they still remain, and 25,000 printed
books were dispersed to other libraries.
The current Bibliothèque de la Sorbonne started as the library of
the University of Paris in 1770, when the University took over the
books and buildings of the Jesuits, who were expelled from France
in 1763. The present library building was completed in 1897, and
is located on the site of the original Collège de Sorbonne.
Special Interest
The library's collection is in two parts. The collections patrimoniales
contain the original library, formed in 1770, and the works acquired
up to the time of the French Revolution. Also included are the
Bibliothèque Victor-Cousin, which Cousin willed to the University
of Paris, and which has which has been in the Sorbonne library
since 1978; and archives of the University of Paris. There are
100,000 pre-1801 imprints, and 300,000 19th century books.
The present collections contain 2.5 million volumes obtained in the
19th and 20th centuries. The main focus is on classics, medieval
and modern history, linguistics and literature, and philosophy.
