Brief History
The Clementinum is a beautiful Baroque group of buildings,
which is one of the most important architectural monuments of
Prague. It has long been linked with the life of the National
Library, and was built as a Jesuit college between 1556 and 1726.
The greatest treasure of the Clementinum is the Baroque
Library, which is thought to have been completed in 1727 by
Kilian Ignatius Dientzenhofer. The astronomical and geographical
globes in the picture are from the 17th and 18th centuries.
Raphael Ungar formed the National Library in 1781. He also
welcomed Mozart to the Clementinum. The two met in 1787,
and there was a Mozart museum there between 1837 and the
1880s – the first Mozart museum in the World. Ungar’s records
show that there were 147,000 volumes in 1801, and 300 visitors
a day.
Special Interest
Today, the National Library has over 6 million volumes and grows
at 70,000 a year. It attends to almost 1 million readers a year.
Its treasures include: manuscripts donated to Prague University
by Charles IV in 1366; Velislav’s Pictorial Bible from the mid 14th
century; an important collection of Mozartiana – the Mozart’s
Memorial; and a large collection of books and documents in the
Slavonic Library.
