Brief History
The Library of St. Walburga’s is a unique public library, dating
from the 16th century. The building and its furniture have been
preserved almost completely in their original state, and much of
the original collection is still in its original setting.
The chapter of St. Walburga’s, consisting of 12 priests, not only
occupied itself with liturgy, but also figured as juridical councillors
to the Duke of Guelders or the Aldermen of Zutphen. This
led to the existence of an extraordinary book collection.
In the mid 16th century, two church wardens, Conrad Slindewater
and Herman Berner, had the idea to build a large book room.
Slindewater’s note book indicates that he intended the library to
be a stronghold against reformatory thought. It was built between
1561 and 1564.
Special Interest
The pulpits date from the foundation period, and the books
were chained to prevent their loss from this public library. The
pulpits hold about 300 books from the 15th and early 16th centuries,
some with beautifully stamped skin covers, brass furniture
and clasps.
The collection is gradually being restored by the foundation
Stichting Librije Walburgskerk Zutphen, which welcomes
financial support for this costly but worthwhile project.
