National Library of Russia
The National Library of Russia, in St. Petersburg and
dating from 1795. This wonderful part of the library's
interior would be a treasure for everybody's wall space.
It's an intimate and cosy setting, with a glorious mix of
colours in the walls, ceiling and furniture upholstery.
Appeared in 2001 calendar.
Freising
The Cathedral Library in Freising, Germany, dating from
1734, appeared on the front cover of the 2002 calendar.
There is an incredibly light and airy feel to this
baroque hall, owing to the white wood, the white leather
book covers, and the daylight, which floods in through
the 5 tall windows. This is further enhanced by the white
statue of the God Apollo and the window cases, decorated
with birds.
This is the library I would like to sit and read in.
Zutphen
The Library of St. Walburga at Zutphen in Holland dates from
1564. This library is rather austere in its overall look and
feel. But it has a stark beauty, arising from the historic
atmosphere generated by the aged collection of chained books,
which are displayed in their original setting on pulpits. Some
of these, from the 15th and 16th centuries, have beautifully
stamped skin covers, brass furniture and clasps. Appeared
in 2002 calendar.
Waldsassen
The magnificent Abbey Library at Waldsassen in Germany.
Dating from 1585, in the baroque style, with extraordinary
wood carvings around the walls. There are 10 more or less
life-size carved figures, which support the library galleries,
and their costumes and features suggest that they are
depictions of fools. The library appeared in the 2001 calendar.
Edinburgh
The New Library of the Royal College of Physicians of
Edinburgh, 1682, houses one of the World's finest
collections of medical literature. The combination of rich
wood panelling, thick coloured carpet and fireplace, which
is surmounted by an elegant mirror and clock, give a
delightfully warm ambiance and "homey" feel to this library.
It appeared in the 2001 calendar.
St. Gallen
The Abbey Library in St. Gallen, Switzerland dates from
1758. This baroque library is gorgeous from floor to ceiling,
with a lovely interior design and wonderfully warm woodwork
of walnut and cherry. The incredibly ornate vaulted ceiling is
of typical rococo style. The library and the abbey precinct
were included in the UNESCO list of global cultural heritage
sites in 1983. Appeared on front cover of 2001 calendar.
